22nd African Traditional Medicine Day: Toward a Holistic and Integrated Gabonese Medicine

On Saturday, September 7, 2024, we had the honor of participating in the 22nd African Traditional Medicine Day, an event held at the National Museum of Arts, Rites, and Traditions under the guidance of Professor Henri Paul Bouroubou Bouroubou and traditional practitioner Mrs. Benga Bengone. These two prominent figures are champions of promoting and preserving Gabonese traditional medicine.

While the term "traditional medicine" is often used, at Gabon Terre d’Avenir, we prefer to call it Gabonese medicine. This approach is based on holistic patient care, considering not only symptoms but also the environment, lifestyle, and beliefs of individuals. Our multidisciplinary perspective incorporates natural treatments derived from plants and bark, seamlessly blending ancestral knowledge with a contemporary and scientific vision of health.

A Gabonese Medicine Integrated into the Health System

At GTA, we advocate for the integration of this medicine into the conventional healthcare system, with official recognition by insurance companies, to develop a genuine health economy around Gabon's pharmacopoeia. The synergy between modern medicine and ancestral practices will not only enhance healthcare for our populations but also showcase the unique medical heritage of our country.

In this effort, we are actively seeking funds to acquire the necessary equipment to meet international standards for scientific research. This will also enable us to develop pharmaceutical and therapeutic patents based on plants and other local botanical resources.

Our Products in Service of Health

During the event, we took the opportunity to showcase some of our therapeutic products, particularly Mayay capsules, a natural adaptogen derived from our research. We also announced the recent submission of an export authorization request for our products to the Ministry of Water and Forests. This initiative aims to bring our health solutions to the international stage, highlighting Gabonese expertise in natural care.

Iboga: A Strategic Resource

Iboga, Gabon’s iconic plant, holds a central place in our vision for the future. We firmly believe this strategic resource will strengthen our local medicine and, by extension, the entire Gabonese pharmacopoeia. Iboga has the potential to play a key role in the development of innovative treatments that benefit both our populations and the global community.

A Medicine, A Philosophy of Life

It is important to note that Gabonese medicine extends beyond pharmacopoeia. It encompasses practices rooted in a way of life specific to Bantu peoples, centered on a sacred relationship between humans and nature and the respect for human beings. This cultural heritage, passed down through generations, must continue to be valued and integrated into our modernity.

Thanks and Festive Closure

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the partners who contributed to the success of this event, as well as to the National Museum of Arts, Rites, and Traditions for hosting the day with the permission of its director. The event concluded beautifully with a performance of traditional dances by the Village of Ancestors and Tribes group, showcasing the cultural and spiritual richness of our country. It was an enriching moment for all participants and a wonderful opportunity to strengthen collaboration around Gabonese medicine.
