🌿 Green Classrooms Take Root at Ndossi Village: A Transformative Experience for EPC Owendo Students

ree

At Ndossi Village, we had the great pleasure of welcoming students from CE1 and CE2 classes of the École Publique Conventionnée (EPC) of Owendo for a day full of discovery, as part of our Green Classroom Initiative.

Organized in collaboration with the Parents’ Association, this educational outing is part of a new approach that blends learning, ecology, cultural heritage, and local development. It echoes the broader vision carried by Gabon Terre d’Avenir NGO: to reimagine how we educate our children by reconnecting education with our natural environment, cultural wealth, and the socio-economic context of Gabon.

🌍 Immersed in Forest and Marine Ecosystems

Throughout the day, the children were introduced to the richness and vulnerability of Gabon’s ecosystems — in particular, the mangroves, which are essential yet often overlooked coastal environments.

With guidance from our team, they explored the biodiversity of these habitats and learned about their roles in protecting coastlines, supporting aquatic life, and mitigating climate change.

🪘 A Bridge Between Tradition and Modernity

Beyond ecology, the students also delved into traditional Gabonese life and wisdom.

They experienced:

  • The social organization of village life,

  • Traditional Gabonese musical instruments,

  • Ancestral storytelling,

  • Plastic recycling workshops where they created eco-jewelry,

  • And an introduction to local medicinal plants.

These interactive workshops revealed how ancestral knowledge is not outdated, but rather a source of resilience and sustainable innovation when integrated into modern life.

🎓 Rethinking the Future of Education

This day is a clear example of one of the core priorities of the Gabon Terre d’Avenir NGO:

👉 Rethinking Gabon’s education system to make it more contextual, more grounded in the country’s environment and resources, and better aligned with our national challenges and strengths.

We believe it’s time to structurally incorporate ecology, culture, community practices, and local realities into the curriculum, from the earliest years.

Green classrooms should no longer be the exception — they should become a new national standard in a country where nature and tradition offer powerful levers for human development.

🤝 Gratitude and Outlook

We warmly thank:

  • The Parents’ Association of EPC Owendo,

  • The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP),

  • And the Global Environment Facility (GEF),

for their trust and invaluable support in making this initiative possible.

Our goal is clear: to make this a recurring program and gradually extend it to all schools across Gabon.

Ndossi Village will continue to welcome students and provide them with meaningful and transformative experiences, because we believe that today’s children are tomorrow’s conscious builders.
